Bali is an ideal destination for solo travellers—it’s safe, welcoming, and packed with a buzzing backpacker scene. I travelled by myself and got to explore various parts of the island, including Ubud, Canggu, Seminyak and Nusa Penida. Each place has its own unique vibe with a range of activities and experiences.

Ubud, known as the cultural heart of Bali, offers a tranquil and picturesque setting. You can immerse yourself in the lush greenery of the rice terraces, visit ancient temples, indulge in traditional Balinese massages, and explore local art and handicraft markets. Ubud also serves as a gateway to nearby attractions like the Tegalalang Rice Terraces and Mount Batur.

Canggu is a trendy coastal town that attracts surfers and digital nomads from around the world. It offers a relaxed beach vibe, with hip cafes, yoga studios, and a lively nightlife scene. You can catch some waves, enjoy sunset beach sessions and indulge in healthy food options.

Seminyak is another beach town right next to Canggu—it’s a bit more commercialised and lively. The restaurant scene is amazing, and there’s no shortage of sunset beach bars to choose from!

Nusa Penida is an island located southeast of Bali, providing a breathtaking natural landscape. It’s famous for the T-Rex shaped cliffs, beaches, and crystal-clear sea. Definitely visit the iconic spots like Kelingking Beach and Angel’s Billabong, or hike to enjoy panoramic views from the island’s viewpoints.

Apart from these specific locations, Bali offers a range of activities, day trips, and beautiful beaches to enjoy. It’s rich cultural heritage, friendly locals, and natural beauty make it an ideal destination for solo travellers. Whether you’re seeking adventure, relaxation, or cultural exploration, Bali has something to offer for everyone.

Things to do in Ubud

  • Sunrise hike up Mount Batur: This is a popular adventure for early risers and avid hikers. Joining a local tour allows you to climb Mount Batur and reach the summit in time to witness the beautiful sunrise over the island. Many local tour companies offer the same package including a hotel pick up around 1.45-2am, coffee, snacks and drop off.
  • Cycle rice terrace tour and a traditional Indonesian meal with locals: Explore the beautiful rice terraces of Ubud by bicycle and connect with nature and local culture. Once you’ve worked up an appetite, you can enjoy a traditional Indonesian meal with locals.
  • Traditional Balinese cooking course: Bali is renowned for it’s delicious cuisines, and taking a cooking class allows you to learn the secrets of traditional Balinese dishes. You visit the local markets to select fresh ingredients then enjoy a hands-on cooking session. I attended two different cooking courses; Paon Bali Cooking Class and Nia Balinese Cooking Class – both were excellent.
  • Enjoy a relaxing massage: Bali has several affordable and relaxing spas where you can enjoy a variety of treatments to pamper yourself and unwind. The prices are so much cheaper than in Europe so they are a popular spot to relax and indulge in a massage. My favourite was Taksu Spa
  • Quad Biking and White Water Rafting: For the adrenaline junkies you can book a day out rafting on the river and off-road quad bikes through the jungle.
  • Take a yoga class: Ubud has numerous studios and retreat centres offering a wide range of classes for all levels
  • Campuhan Ridge Walk: This scenic walk in Ubud allows you to enjoy stunning views of the lush greenery and rice fields. It’s a peaceful and calming activity that can be enjoyed at your own leisure. There are small, local cafes along the way where you can enjoy a traditional Balinese tea or soft drink.
  • Day trip to Nusa Penida: Nusa Penida is a beautiful island off the coast of Bali, known for it’s scenic coastline and turquoise waters. You can take a day trip to explore the island and visit iconic spots like Kelingking Beach and Angel’s Billabong
