Slovenia is one of the most beautiful countries in Europe – and one of the greenest. Surrounded by the Julian Alps, it’s filled with emerald-green lakes and rivers and a turquoise coastline bordering the Adriatic Sea. It’s an outdoor destination where you can enjoy walking, hiking, cycling or even caving and canyoning whilst enjoying the breathtaking scenery.

5 day itinerary

Day 1-3 – Lake Bled and Lake Bohinj

Hire a car once you land at Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport and drive approximately 35km to the charming village of Bled. There are several (and affordable) Air BnB options in Bled, all of them situated a short 5-10 minute walk to the lake. I stayed in a Swiss chalet-style home, surrounded by wooden panels and decorated with modern and stylish decor. The house also had a beautiful garden where you can enjoy dinner on the peaceful terrace. Alternatively, there are several hotel options within the town centre.

Things to see & do in Lake Bled

  • Rent a rowing boat and row to Bled Island, where you can explore the gothic church which has a 52-metre bell tower
  • Hike the Ojstrica trail for beautiful panoramic views of the Lake Bled
  • Visit Vintgar Gorge – Walk the boardwalk and enjoy spectacular scenery with fast-flowing water and dramatic cliffs
  • Visit Lake Bohinj – a serene and equally beautiful alternative to Lake Bled

Places to eat & drink

  • Vila Preseren – A lovely terrace restaurant overlooking the lake
  • Grajska Plaza Restaurant and CafeA perfect pitstop for an aperitif or a cold drink after completing the scenic loop around the lake
  • Špica – A local restaurant serving a great selection of local dishes and an impressive selection of over 50 beers

Day 4-5 – Ljubljana

Slovenia’s charming capital is a blend of historic architecture with a vibrant food scene and lush green spaces.

Things to see & do:

  • Food Tour Ljubljana – Sample the local dishes and wine on this gastronomy tour across the city – highly recommend
  • Watermelon Ljubljana by Bike – A fun and active way to explore the city, cycling through Tivoli Park and the tranquil woodland trails of Rožnik Hill.
  • Ljubljana Castle – Take the funicular up for panoramic views of the city.

Places to eat & drink:

  • Nasahisa – Informal restaurant serving local food & pizzas with riverside views
  • Maus – A relaxed al fresco riverside bar offering great wine and beer
